Student Extra Curricular Activities

SPANISH CLASSES

St. John’s-St. Andrew’s School began to teach Spanish in 2005.  We began with grades 3-6.  In the school year of 2006 we added Spanish to grades one and two.  We use the CD’s from Northern Arizona University for the lessons.  The students are doing well.  We feel with our culture changing it would be very good the the students to have some background.  When they attend Junior High and High School in Melrose they will have many classmates who are of Spanish descent.  It will help them to communicate with them.  It will also give them a start for continuing Spanish in High School.

STUDENT COUNCIL

In the grades 3-6 we have a student council.  The Officers are from the fifth and sixth grade, but each room has a representative. They plan parties, Advent and Lent extra activities and whatever else may come up.  It is fun for them to take the leadership in some of the activities.  One of the teachers is the Advisor for the Student Council.

MASS SERVERS

All of our 3-6 grade students are Mass Servers.  They multiage for serving and in this way the younger students learn by serving with the older students.  This carries over to the Sunday Liturgies.  They are scheduled in their particular parish, but in school they all serve regardless of what parish they belong to.  They all love to serve.  We have Mass two times a week in the Meire Grove building and two Masses in the Greenwald building.

OCTOBERFEST

This is an annual affair, and a delightful one.  Since many of the people in our two parishes are german, it goes over very well.  All people are invited, and we have outstanding crowds.  The students sing, polka, walz, perform Schnitzelbank.  One of our local band groups play for the occasion and it is an evening of fun for all.  Chicken Noodle Soup is served, Brats and Sauer Kraut, candy, pop corn, soft drinks and chips.  It is a Gala time for all.

BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL

Since our school is very small sometimes we have a mixed team, sometimes just boys and sometimes just girls.  One of the teachers acts as a Coach and we play another Catholic School or two.  It is just an opportunity for the students to become familiar with team play.

CHRISTMAS PLAY

Each year the students give a Christmas Pageant.  This year we are giving “The Next Noel.’  It is open to the public and we give two performances.  Usually at 1:00 and 8:00.  We usually have very good crowd’s at both.  Our students are very good at singing and it brings joy to parents grandparents and friends.  It is good for them to share with others.

PASSION PLAY

Every other year the students do the Passion Play.  The older students do the acting, but the entire school does the singing.  It brings much meaning to all of the students of those important days in their Catholic Faith.

LIVING STATIONS

The alternate year we do the living stations.  Again the students all participate in the singing, but the older students do the acting.  There is a narrator and it is a very “prayerful” experience for all – students and parents alike.  Again, a memory of their Catholic Faith.
